About Us

We started growing vegetables in our backyard 10 years ago. Over the years, we have added more raised beds and planted some fruit trees and grape vines. We always learn and try new things in our Zone 5 Colorado garden.

Gardening at this elevation has its challenges, but we have learned that good soil, seeds, water, and mulch can produce delicious and nutritious food. We also use a number of plants that are natural pest repellents. Some of these pest repellent plants include marigolds, nasturtiums, lavender, mint, basil, chives, garlic, sage, dill, thyme, rosemary, onions, borage and calendula.

We try to keep things simple. For mulch, we use leaves from neighbors and free wood chips from a local tree cutting business. We do not use pesticides or herbicides in our garden. In addition to our compost, we also obtain compost from Paonia, CO.

Thanks to Ken and Gail Kuhns at Peach Valley CSA Farm in Silt, CO for sharing their expertise and local agricultural knowledge. We learned so much volunteering at their farm. We miss those fun times and Gail’s delicious farm lunches!

And thanks to our grown kids Jake and Maggie for tolerating our gardening adventures and strange meals containing things like kohlrabi, sunchokes, fava beans and daikon radish.
